Why the Air Fryer is a Good Idea When You Want to Eat Better and Lose Weight

A crucial aspect of achieving success with the WeightWatchers Program involves mastering the art of crafting healthier renditions of beloved dishes. For countless individuals, this means replicating the crispy, crunchy textures found in favorites such as fried chicken or French fries. Enter the air fryer, widely celebrated as the ultimate tool for preparing fries and a variety of other dishes, particularly for those striving to make healthier choices and shed pounds.

  1. Reduced Oil Usage: A traditional deep fryer requires extra oil, which adds excess calories and unhealthy fats to those delicious fries. In contrast, air fryers cooking process use hot air circulation to crispy fries and other foods with just a fraction of the oil, resulting in delicious curly fries that are lower in calories and fat.
  2. Healthier Cooking Method: By using hot air to cook food, air fryers eliminate the need for deep frying in hot oil, reducing the formation of harmful compounds associated with high-temperature cooking methods. This makes air-cooked fries a healthier option compared to their deep-fried counterparts.
  3. Lower Calorie Content: Since air-fried fries require less oil for cooking, they contain fewer calories per serving compared to traditional cooked fries. This makes them a more diet-friendly option for those watching their calorie intake while still satisfying their cravings for crispy, flavorful fries.
  4. Versatility: Air fryers are incredibly versatile appliances that can cook a wide range of foods, from frozen fries and chicken wings to vegetables and even desserts. This versatility allows individuals to experiment with different recipes and ingredients, making it easier to incorporate healthier options into their diet. This fun factor is important for avoiding boredom when trying to lose weight and eat better.
  5. Crispy Texture: Despite using less oil, air-fried fries still achieve a crispy and golden-brown exterior, similar to traditional fries. This satisfying texture makes them a popular choice for those looking to enjoy healthier versions of their favorite comfort foods without sacrificing taste or texture.

Recipe Notes, Substitutions & Variations

If your spiralizer (affiliate link) includes smaller blades, you can also make curly shoestring fries. I made both (regular curly fries and shoestring fries and liked them both). I preferred the regular curly fries fresh out of the air fryer—in my opinion they were the ideal combination of crunchy and crispy chewy with a nice potato flavor.

I also liked the shoestring fries, but they were much crispier than the regular fresh curly fries (due to being much thinner), so you have to be careful with your cooking times to not burn them. For leftovers, I much preferred the shoestring fries as they reminded me a lot of the Potato Stix I used to eat as a kid.

Variations & Substitutions

Sweet Potato Fries: Substitute sweet potato for russet potato.

No Avocado Oil? Substitute your favorite high heat vegetable oil such as peanut, grapeseed, sunflower, safflower or canola. If you want to use olive oil for air frying, it’s recommended to use light olive oil or refined olive oil, which have higher smoke points and are more suitable for higher-heat cooking methods. These types of olive oil can withstand the temperatures typically used in air frying (usually between 350°F to 400°F or 175°C to 200°C) without smoking or producing undesirable flavors.

No Spiralizer (affiliate link)? You can cut your fries into thin even french fries or steak fries instead.

No Everything Bagel Seasoning (affiliate link)? Use whatever seasoning you prefer to create all kinds of varieties of curly fries. Classic salt and pepper, garlic powder, cajun seasoning, taco seasoning, ranch seasoning, Old Bay seasoning and/or grated Parmesan all would be delicious.

No fine sea salt? Use whatever salt you prefer. Regular sea salt, truffle salt, kosher salt, seasoning salt, smoked salt, etc.

Easy Alternative? Substitute your favorite brand of plain frozen french fries and season them with the Everything Bagel Seasoning (affiliate link).
